Sylvan Beach Pavilion Rehabilitation Groundbreaking Ceremony

On Wednesday September 5th, Commissioner Jack Morman hosted the groundbreaking ceremony for the Sylvan Beach Pavilion rehabilitation project. This marks the start of a planned 9 month rehabilitation of the pavilion. During Hurricane Ike in 2008, the pavilion experienced heavy structural and cosmetic damage. With cooperation between Harris County, Friends of Sylvan Beach and the Texas Historic Commission, the renovations will foster effective historic preservation.

Key new additions will include an upgraded aluminum curtain wall window system and an alternate access into the pavilion through an enclosed glass block entry way. The construction cost of $4.9 million will be provided through a mix of federal Hurricane Ike recovery funds and Harris County PCT2 park bond funds.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, comments were offered by Commissioner Morman, County Judge Ed Emmett, La Porte Mayor Louis Rigby and President of The Friends of Sylvan Beach Park and Pavilion, Ted Powell. Sylvan Beach Pavilion is a Recorded Texas Historic Landmark, a State Archeological Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
