It has been just over 8 months since Adrian Garcia was sworn into office to be the next Harris County Commissioner of Precinct 2. Since that very first day, Commissioner Garcia has been working feverously to make Precinct 2 better than how he acquired it: increasing public health awareness, creating a program to connect youth and adults to educational opportunities, supporting bail reform, improving local drainage, just to name a few. Every day is a new opportunity to take on the day and make a difference for the people of Precinct 2.

The hearts of our Crosby Community are left broken with the passing of two beloved instructors: Cynthia Ann Roberts; and Cindy Forsythe. Cynthia, also known as “Cindy,” Ann Roberts was born on January 11, 1960, in Baytown, TX. She grew up in Crosby, TX attending Sacred Heart Catholic School in her early years and graduated from Crosby High School in 1978. In 2006, Cynthia began to make a difference in the lives of the people from May Community Center and Crosby Community Center by teaching Yoga twice a week. She had such an incredible passion for yoga and volunteer work that she began to teach two additional days.

A person is guilty until proven innocent or wealthy. This is how our old outdated justice system has been working in Harris County for far too long. There have been incidents that an individual may stay in jail for months. Most are jailed not because they are violent criminals or guilty, but because they cannot afford to pay a bond. This system is far from just and fair because it penalizes the poor.  This may be a single mother who was arrested for failing to pay a traffic ticket, loses her job, misses payments for her mortgage and as a result, loses her home. She is now homeless. Or it could be a young man who was wrongfully accused but spent 6 months in jail before someone took a closer look at his case. We have to fix this. We can do better. We must do better. 

One year ago, Gonzales, along with numerous Harris County Precinct 2 representatives and members of the Seguin Historical Society, cut the opening ribbon on the park that dawns the name of his great-great-great-great grandfather, Juan N. Seguin. Seguin was the only commissioned officer who fought at the Alamo and survived to fight for Texas independence at San Jacinto. Seguin went on to be the mayor of San Antonio and a senator in Texas Congress. He died in 1890.
