Q&A with Precinct 2's Veronica Puente, Community Center Manager
Q: Please describe your role and how it impacts Precinct 2 residents.
A: As the manager of the Deputy Darren Almendarez Community Center, my role is pivotal in shaping the well-being and cohesion of the Northeast Community within Precinct 2. My responsibilities extend beyond the daily operations of the center; they involve understanding the unique needs of our diverse community members and creating programs that address those needs. By maintaining strong connections with local families and organizations, I aim to offer resources, and activities, and empower individuals to thrive. Whether through educational programs, health initiatives, or recreational activities, my focus is on providing a welcoming and inclusive space that enhances the quality of life for all residents. The community center serves as a hub for growth, collaboration, and support, and my role ensures that the center continuously adapts to meet the evolving demands of the population we serve.
Q: How does the community center contribute to bringing people together and supporting local families?
A: The community center is more than just a physical space; it is a foundation for social connection and community building. It's a center where people from all walks of life can unite, share experiences, and build lasting relationships. For many, the center is a place where families can find support, from educational workshops, family-oriented events, or access to vital resources like food drives and health screenings. By providing these services, we help reduce the barriers that often isolate individuals and families, creating an environment of inclusion and mutual support. Additionally, our programs foster trust and confidence among community members, encouraging them to participate in the development of their neighborhoods. By connecting people, the center helps to reduce social isolation, which we know can have significant negative effects on physical and mental health. In this way, we not only support local families but also contribute to the overall well-being and cohesion of the community.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: What I find most rewarding about my job is the opportunity to help others grow and succeed. There is something incredibly fulfilling about seeing the impact of your work on individuals, families, and the larger community. Whether it is helping a young person develop new skills through our educational programs or seeing a senior citizen engage in activities that bring them joy, the results of my efforts are tangible and meaningful. I believe in the power of giving back and making a difference in people's lives, and this job allows me to do that daily. I also enjoy the variety of challenges that come with managing a community center; no two days are ever the same, and I love the opportunity to innovate, solve problems, and create programs that address real community needs. Knowing that my work contributes to the betterment of the community makes every day feel purposeful.
Q: What does Hispanic Heritage Month mean to you?
A: Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to reflect on the rich cultural history, contributions, and legacy of Hispanic and Latinx communities, not just in the United States but across the world. For me, it is a celebration of our culture, our traditions, and the sacrifices made by those who came before us. It is a time to honor the resilience, creativity, and strength of Hispanic individuals who have shaped our communities and made significant contributions to society in various fields. Personally, Hispanic Heritage Month is about remembering where we come from, preserving the values and traditions that have been passed down through generations, and ensuring that those legacies continue to inspire future generations. It is also an opportunity to educate others about our heritage, fostering a greater sense of understanding and unity in our increasingly diverse society.
Q: Do you have any advice for younger generations about celebrating and embracing their heritage?
My advice to younger generations is to embrace your heritage fully and take pride in who you are and where you come from. It is important to understand that your culture and background are sources of strength, not something to be hidden or minimized. Celebrate your heritage by learning about your ancestors’ stories, traditions, and contributions, and use that knowledge to build your sense of identity. Be proud of the sacrifices made by those before you and carry that pride with you in everything you do. Whether it is through education, art, community service, or any other avenue, strive to leave a positive mark on the world while staying true to your roots. By honoring your heritage, you not only preserve your culture but also inspire others to do the same, fostering a sense of pride and belonging for generations to come.
