Q&A with Tiffany Hicks, Precinct 2's Senior Director of Grants

1. Tell us a little about your professional background and how your current role impacts the residents of Precinct 2.
I am a high-energy leader and accomplished facilitation specialist with extensive experience in professional development. I excel in enhancing operational efficiency, employee performance, and organizational culture. In my current role as Senior Director of the Grants Department at Harris County Precinct 2, I lead the strategic financial management of grants, expenses, and revenue. I ensure alignment with community-driven initiatives centered on education, engagement, and empowerment. This includes a broad range of programs, from workforce development to health and veterans services. The Grants Department not only secures crucial funding but also ensures that these resources drive long-term community success and growth, reflecting the precinct’s mission to achieve positive, tangible outcomes for the people they serve.
2. What do you enjoy most about your job?
I am honored to work alongside a group of individuals that care deeply for the community we serve. It warms my heart when our team procures funding for much need programming in our community. Finally, I love the innovative ways we approach meeting the needs of our community, as a team we brainstorm and seek each other’s counsel, and we support each other.
3. March is Women’s History Month. What does this observance mean to you?
Women's History Month is a celebration of impactful leadership, and community development. As I reflect on my own career journey, it has been dedicated to driving operational efficiency and strategic financial management, along with improving employee and community experiences. This month highlights the significant contributions of women in aligning resources with community-driven initiatives, and particularly for women that share access to those resources so that our communities can be educated, engaged and empowered. Utilizing dual master’s degrees in management & Community Development, I strive to exemplify how women leverage our knowledge to create meaningful change. This observance serves as an inspiration, showcasing the achievements of women who break barriers and create positive outcomes.
4. Who or what event in Women’s History inspires you?
Michelle Obama's work is inspiring because it demonstrates a commitment to:
Empowerment: She focused on empowering young people, especially girls, to reach their full potential.
Equity: Her initiatives addressed disparities in education, health, and access to resources.
Well-being: She prioritized the health and well-being of children and families.
Community: She uses her platform to uplift whole communities.
She is an example of a modern woman who uses her position to make lasting and positive changes in society.
5. If you could go back in time, what advice would you have given yourself when you were starting your career?
Ask for help! You do not have to figure it all out by yourself. Seek a mentor in any area in which you feel you lack confidence and/or ample knowledge. And build a team of wise counsel (brain trust) committed to helping you achieve your career and business goals.
