COMMISSIONER ADRIAN GARCIA LEADS FIRST STEP TOWARD A GREENER HARRIS COUNTY

HARRIS COUNTY, TX – Commissioner Adrian Garcia successfully led the effort to move Harris County to 100 percent renewable energy on Tuesday, October 8th. The purchase of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) is the first step toward making Harris County greener and positions it to be a leader among local governments by setting the standard for green energy use.

This purchase will make Harris County the largest county purchaser of renewable power in the state. With this change, the County’s purchase of green power will account for 100 percent of its annual electricity demand of more than 242,032 megawatt-hour (MWh).

By purchasing energy from renewable sources, we are combating air pollution and other negative effects of climate change. It is important to acknowledge we are in the middle of a climate crisis and we need to commit to using more sustainable energy,” Commissioner Garcia said.

RECs are energy commodities that represent proof that one MWh of electricity was generated from an eligible renewable energy resource and was fed into the electricity grid.

“Using green energy to power Harris County facilities will reduce our carbon footprint while demonstrating our commitment to drive further development in the renewables market and help make green power even more affordable and accessible for everyone,” Commissioner Garcia said.

The entity that procures Harris County’s energy, Public Power Pool (P3), estimates the financial obligation to be less than $200,000 annually to move Harris County to 100 percent reliance on renewable energy sources.
