RELEASE: Manchester Sidewalk Construction Start
Commissioner Adrian Garcia’s Office to construct new sidewalk in Manchester Community
Harris County, TX— Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia is proud to announce the start of construction on a new sidewalk on Manchester Street in Houston.
The $1.5 million project includes the construction of a six-foot-wide, nearly two-mile long sidewalk along Manchester Street from Broadway to San Saba and from Concrete Street to 97th Street. It also includes median modifications for pedestrian crossing signals and crosswalk pavement installations.
“I am excited about this project in the Manchester community, which has long been underserved. This project will bring safer connectivity, whether it’d be for drivers, bicyclists, or pedestrians, which has always been a priority of mine,” said Commissioner Adrian Garcia. “Many areas in Precinct 2, like Manchester, lack equity or quality in some of the most basic amenities, like sidewalks, making it difficult for people to travel safely. I’m proud to make these improvements which will take standards to the next level ensuring pathways of quality for all members of the community, young and old.”
With safer connectivity in mind, Commissioner Garcia’s team reached out to various partners and local jurisdictions to identify areas needing sidewalk improvements. City of Houston Councilmember Robert Gallegos flagged Manchester Street as an area of need and requested assistance.
“Thanks to Commissioner Garcia and Precinct 2, this project will add a critical link in the sidewalk system for residents in the Manchester community. It will provide safer pedestrian access to nearby schools, transit stations, parks, and shopping centers. The City of Houston greatly values its partnership with Precinct 2, which allows us to prioritize needs and better leverage resources for the community,” said Councilmember Gallegos.
Construction is expected to be complete in the third quarter of 2021.
