Precinct 2 Seniors and Teens Get Free Laptops!
Harris County, TX— On August 9, over 190 Precinct 2 seniors and teens came together at the East Harris County Activity Center thinking it was just another bingo day. Little did they know what was about to unfold.
Since 2011, Comcast has been on a mission across the country to provide wide access to technology to low-income communities; and teamed up with Precinct 2 to bring this opportunity to its residents. After a presentation about the Internet Essentials program, Comcast and Dell surprised seniors and youth with free laptops and 6-month internet access cards
“I’ve wanted one for a long time and I’m so happy,” said Precinct2gether senior, Harty Melchor. “I’ve had identity theft in the past and this will finally allow me to be on top of things.”
The partnership is part of Comcast’s internet adoption program, Internet Essentials, which connects low-income families to digital opportunities through low-cost, high-speed internet at home and free trainings. This program brings great opportunity to Precinct 2, which has amongst the lowest in educational attainment levels and lowest income. The internet access ha has become a necessary tool for school projects and connecting with loved ones.
“This is going to help me figure out more about how to become a biologist and get dual credit in school,” said Jarrell Jackson, an eighth grader and Precinct 2 Youth Program participant.
The free laptops were delivered in hand by Commissioner Adrian Garcia, Comcast’s Senior Executive Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer David Cohen, and Paralympic gold medalist Rico Roman, who is also a Purple Heart recipient.
“Our Precinct 2 seniors and teens deserve to have equal access to technology,” said Commissioner Garcia. “I believe we can close the digital gap between generations and develop a stronger connection between the two, but for that we need to provide them with the necessary tools.”
To top off the surprise, Comcast and Dell are sponsoring a computer lab for the East Harris County Activity Center, equipping the community with more computers and software.
