Precinct 2 Meal Program

Harris County Precinct 2 is dedicated to promoting better health for senior citizens by providing them with FREE nutritious and tasty hot meals throughout the week. The organization provides these services through congregate meals at designated Community Centers, as well as home deliveries for individuals who qualify. Home Delivery Eligibility

After submitting an application, a Harris County representative will evaluate your conditions. Evaluations include assessing your ability to perform daily activities such as food preparations and shopping, how often you leave your home, as well as your access to other assistance services. Note: All information gathered is totally confidential, and records are kept at the Harris County Precinct 2 service provider’s office.

You may qualify for home deliveries if you are:

Ages 60 and over.
Homebound due to illness, disability, or frailty.
Unable to prepare nourishing meals due to limited mobility, psychological, or mental impairment.
Without resources such as family and friends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is eligible to receive a home delivered meal?
If you are age 60 or over and homebound because of illness, disability or frailty, you are eligible to receive home delivered meal services. If you are unable to prepare nourishing meals due to limited mobility, psychological or mental impairment, or if you are without resources such as family and friends, you also may be eligible.

How is eligibility determined?
When you apply for services, Harris County will send someone to your home to help assess your condition. Among the conditions they will evaluate are your ability to perform activities of daily living, how often you leave your home, your ability to prepare nutritious meals and shop for food, and your access to other assistance services. You will be reassessed after you have been in the program for six months.

Is my information kept confidential?
All information gathered about you during the eligibility assessment process is totally confidential, and records will be kept at the Harris County Precinct 2 service provider’s office. The only time any health information will be released is in the event an emergency medical provider needs the information in order to provide emergency treatment to you. Client is responsible for informing site location of changes to this information.

How much do the meals cost?
If you are evaluated and found eligible to receive meals, then there is no cost to you.

How often can I receive a home-delivered meal?
Meals are delivered once a day, Monday through Friday, with the exception of Harris County holidays. Occasionally, accidents, traffic or inclement weather may delay delivery. The driver will deliver meals in a marked Harris County vehicle and will knock or ring the bell to let you know your meal has arrived. Meals cannot be left on the porch or with neighbors if you are not at home to receive your meal. It is client’s responsibility to notify the site location if you will not be home to receive your meal.

Do I have to let the delivery staff into my home?
If you’d prefer, you may take the meal from the delivery person at the door. Staff members can hand the meal directly to the participant or to an authorized caregiver, designated by both the participant and the service provider. However, if you would like to have the delivery staff bring the meal into your home and set it up for you, the staff member will be glad to do that. In case of an emergency, delivery staff will contact emergency services and stay with you until help arrives.

What kinds of meals are provided?
The menus are monitored by a registered dietician to insure correct portion size. Harris County Precinct 2 home-delivery staff adheres to all County Health Department guidelines to insure meals meet temperature and sanitation requirements.

Are meals provided at the site locations?
If you are 60 or older you can qualify for meals at the site locations. Fill out a participation form and sign up for meals at the locations 2 days in advance.
