Since 1978, residents in the McNair and surrounding communities have gathered for activities and socializing at the J. D. Walker Community Center. The center was named in honor of Mr. Jefferson D. Walker, a long-time McNair resident, community leader, educator, and a member of the Harris County Housing Authority Board. The center became a popular area landmark and was expanded in June 1993.  The center is located within the Edna Mae Washington Park. A Head Start Program is located adjacent to the center.

The Walker Center is home to a congregate and homebound meal program to serve area senior citizens.
